In The Mean Time…

How much thought have you given your dryer? If you’re like me, it’s not really top of mind except when cleaning out the lint trap when drying a load of laundry.

But did you know that the ventilation system behind your dryer is actually the most important part of the dryer? This is because the ventilation system behind plays a huge part in how much air is running through, how hot your dryer runs, and how efficient it can dry your clothes.

Also, dryer vents are the second leading cause of house fires in the United States. More than 15,500 fires are caused by clothes dryers and results in 10 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and more than $100 million in direct property damage each year.

Cleaning the Lint Trap Isn’t Enough

Don’t get me wrong. It is definitely something that needs to get done. But it’s not enough. And, like most things at your house, your dryer requires annual servicing or else it could stop working properly.

Gas Fumes

In my opinion, the scariest aspect of a clogged dryer vent is the possibility of the release of poisonous gas fumes. Blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide to back up into your home instead of being exhausted outdoors.

Higher Energy Bills

If your dryer vent is clogged or blocked, it will have to run longer to fully dry your laundry, which uses more energy and could cause your electric bills to increase.

Shorter Dryer Lifespan

If your dryer is taking twice as long to dry clothes, it’s being used twice as much, essentially cutting its life span in half.

Shorter Clothing Lifespan

When your dryer takes longer to dry clothes, then those clothes are in the dryer longer, and this causes more wear and tear on those clothes shortening their lifespan as well. Plus, it heats up more. When the lines are clogged, the heat has to go somewhere. And a lot of times it goes back into the dryer and your clothes begin to suffer.

Critters will nest

When the lint buildup in your dryer vent becomes too much, the duct hood flap doesn’t close properly allowing for an avenue for critters like mice, birds, and snakes to make their home in the vent or crawl through it to get inside your home.

When Do You Need to call a Professional?

The clearest answer is annually. You need an annual inspection on your dryer to make sure your unit is running at top performance. But if you haven’t had an inspection, then the answer is now.

However, if you’re still not convinced on an annual inspection, here are some clear signs that it’s time to have someone come out to take a look.

Longer Drying Cycles

One of the first signs that your dryer isn’t working like it should, is when it takes longer than normal to dry your clothes. Dryers work by removing hot, moist air, so if something is preventing that air from getting out, your laundry will probably need a few extra cycles to dry.

Your Laundry Room is Hotter Than normal

If the hot air from above isn’t able to escape, you can only imagine that it has to go somewhere. A lot of the time, it just goes back into your laundry room. You can also experience your clothes coming out a lot hotter than normal.

You Smell A Funny Smell

This isn’t from your uncle Harold, either. If you smell a strange smell, and you’ll know when you smell it, it could be a sign that your dryer is not ventilating properly and it’s time to get it checked out.
